1. Follow the 60-30-10 Colour Rule

Interior decorators follow the 60-30-10 rule to balance colours. This rule states that 60% of a room should consist of a dominant colour, while the remaining 30% and 10% should consist of secondary and accent colours, respectively.
Make sure you keep this design rule top of your mind when picking out accessories and wall décor. In many cases, these items will fall in the 10% accent colour category. If your accent colours are beginning to overwhelm your space, however, don’t hesitate to implement décor that uses your dominant or secondary colours as well.

2. Find a Sense of Balance

While it’s true that too many accessories can lead to clutter and chaos, it’s equally true that a lack of décor can make your space feel hollow, clinical, and bland.

There is a fine line between over-decorating and under-decorating, so it’s wise to map out your space ahead of time. Generally speaking, décor should make up the final 10% of your home and should only be added once your furniture has been arranged.

3. Consider the Room

Each room should dictate the type and size of your décor—particularly your wall art. For a bedroom or bathroom, for example, it’s often wise to choose one large statement piece. Ideally, it should feature soft, calming colours that make it easy to rest. Big, bright tones can create a distracting eyesore when you’re trying to wind down.
